Summary

Massacring his way to the top to become emperor of the cultivation world, Mo Ran’s cruel reign left him with little satisfaction。 Now, upon suffering his greatest loss, he takes his own life。。。

To his surprise, Mo Ran awakens in his own body at age sixteen, years before he ever began his bloody conquests。 Now, as a novice disciple at the cultivation sect known as Sisheng Peak, Mo Ran has a second chance at life。 This time, he vows that he will attain the gratification that eluded him in his last life: the overly righteous shall fall, and none will dare treat him like a dog ever again! His furious passion burns most fiercely for his shizun, Chu Wanning, the beautiful yet cold cultivation teacher who maintains a cat-like aloofness in his presence。 Yet despite Mo Ran’s shameless pursuit of his own goals, he begins to question his previously held beliefs, and wonders if there could be more to his teacher–and his own feelings–than he ever realized。

I read this about a year ago and I'm STILL not over it。 I'm absolutely obsessed with all the characters especially Xue Meng (I just love that lil guy ugh)。 There are so many details and hints hidden all throughout the story which make the big reveals and plot twists even more impressive。 Meatbun 。。。 outdid herself with this UGH。 IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS YET THOUGH, BEWARE!!! There is a long grocery list of content/trigger warnings that you should definitely look at before reading。 Overall, legit I read this about a year ago and I'm STILL not over it。 I'm absolutely obsessed with all the characters especially Xue Meng (I just love that lil guy ugh)。 There are so many details and hints hidden all throughout the story which make the big reveals and plot twists even more impressive。 Meatbun 。。。 outdid herself with this UGH。 IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS YET THOUGH, BEWARE!!! Some areas of how this story was written were concerning for me and I feel mixed on how I should react about it。 I really loved the plot, characterization, and world-building though。 They were done great, kept me gripping in anticipation for more pages, and soon I found myself spiralling into addiction。 The characterization? On a different level (I love xue meng and ye wangxi so much wjcujwiqidi)。 I've gotta clap for the author on this one。 The characters motives, emotions, they felt solid。 I fe Some areas of how this story was written were concerning for me and I feel mixed on how I should react about it。 I really loved the plot, characterization, and world-building though。 They were done great, kept me gripping in anticipation for more pages, and soon I found myself spiralling into addiction。 The characterization? On a different level (I love xue meng and ye wangxi so much wjcujwiqidi)。 I've gotta clap for the author on this one。 The characters motives, emotions, they felt solid。 I felt like I was reading history, and no, I didn't mean that in a bad way— not the "bah history, all dates and facts, boring!" kinda way。 It felt like that because each and every one had an understandable side, like you can see why the character had to do what they did。 The author perfectly captured what morally gray meant through the characters, showed how unfair the world was and how opportunities were limited to those privileged enough。 They showed what this could push a person into doing the longer they stayed in the shadow of being treated poorly。 They even created contrasts between some moments, letting readers understand the "why" behind every major event (personally my favorite is xue mengs outburst in book 3, not going to say which, you'll only know if you read it!) Anyways, I've already talked about the good sides of this story on other social medias a lot of times, so I'll just cut it short at that。 I'll be shedding light on the bad sides that I think no one else has brought up。 Mainly, it's how the dub-con scenes were written in the first timeline。 Ah no, now that I recall, there were also some in the second timeline。 They bother me because the author didn't have to put so much detail in how they engaged in their sexual acts。 Like yes, I understand the value of writing the traumatic scenes in details so that the reader can further understand how the trauma embedded within someone, but with how the author framed the writing in the story, it seems to me that it leaned more on borderline。。。 fetishizing。 The writing lingered a lot on the thrusting and other whack stuff that wasn't necessary。 And it's really concerning。 That's part of why I find it hard to share my interest in 2ha, because of the writing style。 That aside, there's also how chu wanning had an interest on mo ran on their younger days knowing how big the age gap was between them。 Like okay, I get it, ancient China (and Asia itself tbh, coming from an Asian myself) doesn't place much care for how big the age gaps are — or maybe even modern, as its revealed in a survey that more Chinese people are open to having a gap of 10 years in romantic relationships than expected, although that was taken from 2019。。。 that's why I used or。 He knew he was wrong for liking his disciple, and not once did he act on it, even trying to rid himself of the feelings, which I admire of him— but I wish that weren't the case。 It'd have been better if chu wanning caught feelings during mo rans adulthood, so that it's a "slowburn reciprocating feelings for someone who didn't know they liked them" kinda trope, not the "slowburn confessing to each other" trope。 From what I remember, I don't think how Chu Wanning started to like him was even included? Or maybe I was too busy bawling my eyes out。 But that's that; these are the two main story elements I wish were changed。 Add the fact that they're also the ones that contribute to putting 2ha in a "problematic" spotlight, at least for me。 Anyways, like I said earlier on in this probably long review (idk I haven't checked the length yet), I still enjoyed 2ha。 I love Chu Wanning, on how he is the kind of person that struggles to express himself, often speaking out words in a jagged manner but won't hesitate to put you first every time。 I love Mo Ran, on his character development and how he finally received the pure love and acceptance he deserved。 Chinese romance stories always give you a different kind of pain, maybe mainly because the authors usually aren't scared of killing off characters despite living unfairly? Hmm。。 no not that, I can't find the exact words to describe how they always manage to wrench through my poor heart, but I just know they're always good at creating a deep-reaching kind of angst and pain。 Mini-rant:I reeeallly hate that people judge 2ha at first glance because of the plot summary。 Mo Ran doesn't deserve this judgement from non-readers or those who failed to comprehend the story :/ 。。。more

The book does a great job of examining issues of redemption and morality, focusing on Mo Ran's battle with his darker inclinations, the guilt from his past life, and his attempts to make amends while given a second opportunity。 The world's fate, as well as race conflicts between humans and demons, are at stake in the large-scale plot that is developing around the main characters。 Unfortunately, that story's real structure is a touch haphazard and the author likes twists to tedious degrees while The book does a great job of examining issues of redemption and morality, focusing on Mo Ran's battle with his darker inclinations, the guilt from his past life, and his attempts to make amends while given a second opportunity。 The world's fate, as well as race conflicts between humans and demons, are at stake in the large-scale plot that is developing around the main characters。 Unfortunately, that story's real structure is a touch haphazard and the author likes twists to tedious degrees while being less than adept at employing foreshadowing。 It took me a little while to warm up to the characters in this novel, but once I did, there was no turning back。 From the central pair to the supporting cast and even the adversaries, all of the primary characters in this story managed to shine。 The main two's relationship is turbulent, deeply toxic, and desperately trying to mend itself。 It is marked by unhealthy codependency and a vicious hate-lust。 I became really concerned in these characters' attempts to heal and develop a relationship that had previously been so tarnished as I followed them on a fascinating journey as they battled through the muck of circumstance。 While this book is quite hot, it would have benefited from being much shorter。 It's a monster to get through, but if you enjoy noncon, investigations of toxic codependency, dramatic drama, and unhappy relationships, you should read it。 To be perfectly honest, I initially loathed this book, but I couldn't stop reading, and eventually I started to adore it。 。。。more
